With the release of iOS 10, Apple added the ability to let its users play games with their contacts in iMessage. They don’t interfere in your conversation in any way, but you can fire up these multiplayer games anytime while having a conversation with your peers. It’s clearly the best thing to happen to iMessage in years. So, if you’re looking to play some fun games with your friends on your iPhone, here are the 10 best iMessage games you should check out.
How To Get Started With Games in iMessage
Getting started with games is really simple. Just follow the simple steps given below and you’ll be good to go.
- Start a new conversation in iMessage. Now, tap the Apps icon located next to the text box.
- From the Apps menu, tap the App Store icon to visit the store and see a collection of apps, games, and stickers that you can try within iMessage. You can simply tap and install them just like you would do with a normal app.
After downloading a game or an app of your choice, you can start using them by tapping on the icon that shows up on top of the text box. You can scroll through them to select the game or app of your choice and get started.
Note: In order to play the game, the other person also needs to have the game or app installed on their iPhone.
10 iMessage Games You Should Play
1. Game Pigeon
Game Pigeon is one of the best titles to download as it contains a variety of different classic games. You can either go on a friendly bout with your friend in 8 Ball Pool or spend some time taking shots in paintball.
All you need to do is select Game Pigeon from the list of iMessage apps on your phone, pick a game you want to play and get started. Personally, I love playing Basketball on Game Pigeon, but you also get choices like Sea Battle (basically the board game battleship, but on your iPhone), chess, dots and boxes, and a lot more. Apart from the games, you can head over to ‘Settings‘ and set up your avatar to look just the way you want it to, and evenn add things like hats and glasses to your avatar. Some of the cosmetic upgrades here are locked though, and you’ll have to pay to unlock all of them, and to remove ads.
One of the reasons why we added this title high up in the list is because it offers games that would otherwise cost you money if you download them separately. The list of games is not overly fancy but it has a lot of noteworthy titles and it’s a great way to get started with iMessage games. It’s available for free, so be sure to check it out.

2. Tic Tac Toe
Well, we don’t have to explain what Tic Tac Toe really is, do we? It’s a game in which two players take turns marking the spaces in a 3×3 grid with Xs and Os. Get three of your marks in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal row to win the game. It’s really a fun way to kill some time with your peers in iMessage.
Also, if you’re bored of the regular “X & O” in tic-tac-toe, the game also offers a bunch of other, mostly hilarious, combinations including packs like a Justin & Justin pack (Justin Bieber and Justin Timberlake), Trump and Clinton pack, Dogs and Cats pack and a lot more. However, you’ll have to unlock each of these with an in-app purchase.

3. Wordie
Wordie, as the name suggests, is a word-trivia game in which the players are presented with a mishmash of letters along with four pictures that serve as hints for the mystery word. The best part of this particular game is that it has over 600 built-in challenges.
Plus, if the built-in challenges are not enough for you, or you’re just looking to make personalized puzzles, Wordie lets you do that as well. You can add images (up to 4 of them) in your puzzle, along with the answer, and send the puzzle to a friend to see if they can solve it. The game is completely free, so check it out.

4. Mr. Putt
Mr. Putt is arguably one of the best mini-golf apps you can play on iMessage. It has sleek graphics, fluid controls and lot more that makes it a compelling game to play in your free time. The game also has a bunch of courses to choose from. The screenshot attached below shows the Nebula course, but you can choose to take your shots in other courses like Frost, Blaze, and more, each of which has a unique graphical theme.
As soon as you open the game, you’ll get an option to take your shot and pot your ball. Once you’re done, the person who you are playing with will get a chance to take shots. Whoever pots the ball in the least amount of turns wins the game.
Pro Tip: in its current state, the game somehow doesn’t bounce the ball off the edges of the course, so you can just swipe and shoot straight towards the hole and you’ll be able to score a hole-in-one on any course. It’s uncanny, but it’s fun.

5. Simple Trivia
If you are looking for a simple trivia game to kill your time, then Simple Trivia is the way to go. It’s one of those games that will truly test your knowledge across various topics like history, science, and pop culture. You’ll take turns to answer multiple-choice questions from five different categories. If you can’t decide which category to go for, then you can simply select “Everything” which you show questions from across different categories.
As far as the gameplay is concerned, you’ll only get 10 seconds to answer the questions. Also, the title is constantly updated with new questions, so you won’t get bored with the game.

6. Four in a Row
Just like Tic Tac Toe, Four in a row also a name that doesn’t need much of an introduction. Your objective in the game is line up, well, four things in a row. It’s also called Connect Four, a simple game in which the players first choose a color and then take turns dropping one colored disc into a seven-column, six-row vertically suspended grid.
Four in a Row on iMessage doesn’t let you ‘choose’ colors per-se, but the rest of the game remains the same, and it’s a great way to pass some time engaging in a battle of strategy and wits against your friend.

7. Truth Truth Lie
You must have heard or even played this game when you are surrounded by a group of people, but Truth Truth Lie is a really fun game to play even with a single partner. As a player, you get to make three statements about yourself and the other person has to guess which statement is false. The best part of this iMessage game is that you can play this even as a group. This classic icebreaker game also lets you record a video of yourself if you don’t feel like typing texts.

8. Tayasui Sketches
Sketches is a beautiful and versatile drawing tool which you can use within iMessage. It’s a perfect toolbox with which you can create some stunning arts or simply doodle over an existing photo of yours. Sketches also make it easy to create beautiful illustration thanks to its pressure stylus support, so if you’re using iMessage on an iPad Pro, you can create some remarkable things in Tayasui. Heck, there’s also a community where you can share your drawings or find inspirations. Yes, it’s not exactly a game, but it’s a fun way to kill some time when you are tired of exchanging conversations, and if you want, you can play Pictionary using this, which is definitely a fun game!

9. Cobi Arrows
If you are more of an arcade game person then you might want to check out Cobi Arrows. It’s a fairly simple title in which each player gets thirty seconds to fire arrows at a target. The game has really good mechanics, but you definitely encounter a learning curve to get a hang of aiming.
If you’re good at aiming and have good reflexes, then you’ll fall in love with this game. It’s available for free to download from the App Store, but you can also choose to splurge money in the game’s in-app purchases to unlock a couple of new game modes.

10. Qiktionary
We already have a word game in the list, but Qiktionary is a little different than Wordie. Unlike Wordie, in which you’re expected to guess the word by looking at images, in Qiktionary, you’ll have to solve a hidden 4-letter word by guessing your own 4-letter word.
You can take as many turns as you want, but you have to type a word. You can’t type random letters as the game won’t accept them. It’s going to be a little challenging unless you have a strong vocabulary, but you’ll have a lot of fun playing it.
